BYD Atto 2 EV Set for India Debut as Brand Targets Affordable Electric SUV Segment

BYD is expected to launch the Atto 2 EV in India as its most affordable electric SUV, targeting the fast-growing mid-size EV segment. The upcoming model could challenge established rivals while supporting the company's expansion plans in the country.

BYD is preparing to expand its presence in India with a new electric SUV that could make the brand more accessible to a wider range of buyers. The upcoming BYD Atto 2 EV is expected to be positioned below the Atto 3 in the company's lineup and could become its most affordable electric vehicle in the Indian market.

At present, BYD's India portfolio includes the Atto 3, Seal, e6 and Sealion 7, with most of its offerings positioned in the premium segment. With the introduction of the Atto 2, the company is expected to target a broader customer base by entering the popular mid-size electric SUV segment.

The BYD Atto 2 is expected to compete in one of the fastest-growing categories in the country. Once launched, it could rival upcoming and existing electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV, Mahindra BE 6 and other mid-size EVs.

The SUV measures around 4.3 metres in length, making it smaller than the Atto 3. It has a width of 1.8 metres, a height of 1.7 metres and a wheelbase of around 2.6 metres. Despite its compact dimensions, the Atto 2 offers SUV-like proportions with a tall stance and a spacious cabin layout.

BYD could position the Atto 2 as a more affordable alternative within its existing electric vehicle portfolio. The SUV is expected to be priced at around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it significantly more accessible than the Atto 3.

The lower pricing could help BYD attract buyers seeking a premium electric SUV experience without entering higher price brackets. However, the company is expected to assemble the SUV using imported kits, which could limit how aggressively it can price the model.

Internationally, the BYD Atto 2 is available with multiple battery and motor configurations. The SUV is offered with a 94 hp motor producing 180 Nm of torque, a 174 hp motor producing 290 Nm of torque and a 201 hp motor producing 310 Nm of torque.

Battery pack options include 32 kWh, 45.12 kWh, 51.1 kWh and 64.8 kWh LFP units. The top-specification version delivers a claimed driving range of up to 430 km (WLTP) on a single charge.

For the Indian market, BYD is expected to introduce only the fully electric version, as the plug-in hybrid variant may not make financial sense in this segment.

The launch of the Atto 2 could play an important role in BYD's expansion strategy in India. Although the company has built a strong global reputation, its growth in India has remained limited because of high import costs and a relatively small premium electric vehicle market. A more affordable SUV could allow BYD to compete directly with mainstream electric vehicle manufacturers while strengthening its position as more buyers shift towards electric SUVs.

BYD has not officially confirmed the launch of the Atto 2 in India. However, reports suggest the compact electric SUV could arrive in the coming months. Alongside the Atto 2, the company is also preparing the Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV for India, which will target the premium segment.
